Saturday, August 22

Debbie Bowman, Susan Atchley, Kelly Smith, Laura Marshall and I headed out for our annual "Girl's Offshore Trip" last Saturday. We decided to stay in Venice the night before so as to be well rested for our big day.

A rare cold front blessed us with some crisp weather along with a little more W-NW wind than we would have liked, but we quickly loaded up tons of food and drink on the 32-Twin Vee. The excitement at the marina was high as Capt. Hunter and his mate, Woody readied the boat and we eased out of the slip at 5:45 a.m.

With two 350 Yamaha Four Strokes pushing the vessel, the ride down the pass was quick. We crossed the delta and after a quick stop to load the livewell with plenty of frisky hardtails, we headed south.

Upon our arrival at the rig, the tuna were free jumping, which added to the groups excitement. Laura was up first, and got to feel the pain a tuna can dish up right away. With some much appreciated coaching from Woody, she landed the fish and collapsed on the bean bags. Next victim was Susan A. who had it a bit easier with a just legal fish. On to Debbie and Kelly who both got small tuna, and then me...more of the same...just a small yellowfin. All of a sudden, a big blue busted close to the rig so we sacraficed my yellowfin in hopes of tempting the marlin. No luck on the marlin, but something stole our tuna as we were reeling it back in, along with Hunter's marlin rigging.

Around 11 a.m. things started to get right and the bite got better. All of us landed yellowfin in the 50-60 pound class, along with the occasional barracuda, blackfin, and bonita to keep the arms stretched.

The seas started to build around 4 p.m. so we called it a day and got the boat ready to face the head seas on the ride North. I'm sure glad we were in a catamaran!

Back at the dock, Hunter and Woody cleaned the fish and there was plenty of tuna to fill all of our big ice chests.

The ladies were so excited, they called all their friends and it looks like there will be plenty of trips hitting the books shortly.

Thanks to Capt. Hunter and his capable mate Woody, for their patience and professionalism in coaching some of the less experienced ladies on the fine art of tuna wrangling.
It's a wonder they could even MOVE around the boat after all the food we fed them.

If you are ready to tangle with some fat yellowfin tuna, speedy wahoo and tough amberjack give me a call and we'll get you scheduled on one of several of the fastest and most comfortable vessels in the Gulf of Mexico operated by captains who fish full time and give it their all.

September and October are great months to fish and the Midnight Lump Season (JAN-MARCH 2010) will soon be upon us.
Call soon so you won't be left at the dock when the action heats up!

Deep in the Canes chasing Redfish Karen, Capt. Peter and Jason with Nice Reds Golden Redfish from the Ponds
Caldwell Venice Trip
Mon Aug 24, 2009 8:41:34 pm CDT

Jason Caldwell and his wife, Karen made the trip down from Arkansas recently. They joined Captain Peter Young and I for a late afternoon inshore trip on August 15th. This was their annual Venice excursion which was to have included an an offshore tuna trip as well, but a blown port engine on the 32-Twin Vee on our way out of the pass short circuited that plan.

With some afternoon tide movement, we opted instead to show them some of the crystal clear ponds off the East side of the river. They caught their first redfish on a gold spoon, as in past trips they had always fished with bait.

"We found it challenging and couldn't believe the size of the redfish!" Karen exclaimed.

Jason was celebrating his 40th birthday and we also took in the sights, sounds and food at the Empire South Pass Tarpon Rodeo to pass some time before our afternoon departure.

Congrats to Capt. Chris Wilson on his 2nd place finish with a 150-pound silver king.

Karen and Jason, you were fun to fish with as always.

If you want to get in on some late summer and fall redfish, trout and flounder action, give me a call and we'll get you set up with one of the top captains in Venice.

Lavoy Hart's 43rd Birthday to Remember
Offshore Report ~ www.reellousianaadventures.com
Mon Jun 29, 2009 7:12:07 pm CDT

In celebration of his 43rd birthday, Lavoy Hart and friends headed out with Capt. Will on the 34-ft. Contender for their first bluewater trip. I think it's safe to say, they are now spoiled by the fantastic offshore fishery we have here off of Venice, LA.

They had a bang-up day catching plenty of tuna, dolphin and snapper and seeing sights they never expected to see in the cobalt blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Pastor Hart's take on the day is attached below:

"Hey Ms. Susan... thanks for everything!
We had the time of our life with Captain Will Wall on his beautiful "ALL IN" Contender...it was an awesome boat!

Capt. Will is for sure a pro. Man, before 9:00 a.m., we had five mahi-mahi in the boat. In addition, we saw whales and sharks and caught a boat load of tuna. We just stopped catching tuna as we had so much fish. It was great.

Then we jumped over board and took a swim in water that was 3500 feet deep. Boy I tell you this is a guys dream. I'm looking forward to my next trip."

Thanks again,
Pastor Lavoy Hart

The seas have been calm for the most part and the fish have been cooperative. There are stll some open days in July along with plenty in August, September and October.

To schedule your day on the water, give me a call and I'll set your date with one of the most professional and productive captains in Venice, LA.

Venice Offshore Report ~ www.reellouisianaadventures.com
Mon Jun 8, 2009 6:48:16 pm CDT

Staci Warner (a.k.a Geaux Coastal) and friends hit it just right as they heeded offshore for their FIRST bluewater trip on May 31st.

Due to a blown powerhead on one of Capt. Hunter's engines, they made a quick switch to Capt. Trey's beautiful 36-foot Yellowfin and had two captains to entertain them that day for the price of one!

Staci picks up the story from here:

Well Miss Susan,

As promised I am giving the rundown of our trip. I must say that I knew we were in for a treat when the two handsome Captains pulled up to the Marina in a beautiful 36-foot Yellowfin.

After introductions were made we were in the boat and headed out to the deep blue yonder. Once we got on a plane it was about an hour and a half later until the boat slowed down and I could crawl my butt out of one of those E-Sea Rider beanbags. If we wouldn't have caught any fish I would have to say the beanbags were the highlight of the day....for the women anyway.

Once we reached the section of the rip we were going to fish, Capts Hunter and Trey made the rigs up for trolling and we just trolled away for about 15 minutes and I was the first contestant up to battle a nice Mahi Mahi. About 10 minutes later that fish was gently placed in the iced coffin of fish death. 8 Mahi Mahi later it was time for something else, I just didn't know it was gonna be a BLUE MARLIN. We never hooked the darn thing, but the Capts sure gave it everything they had to make the hook up. I witnessed my first in experience seeing that blue beauty come out of the water while crashing bait AWESOME!!

Well after the Marlin experience we got on plane and ran to a shrimp boat that might be holding tuna behind and under it. The tuna were a no-show, so back on plane we went to a good sized rig and Capt Hunter kept us in position and the 6 of us went to fishing our little fish hearts out.

Capt Hunter handed me a rod with a heavy silver jig bait on it and he told me to drop it to the bottom and give it a jerk or two and reel just a bit. Well on the second jerk and reel combo something hugh hit the bait and meant some business. After reeling and reeling and reeling and reeling some more (it is a heck of a long was down to the bottom by the way) a 42.8 pound gag grouper was laying on the deck. Several red snapper were caught and released as the next day (June 1) was opening day of the season.

Next, a school of lemon fish (cobia) came to the boat and 2 were pulled out of that bunch. One of the Beckys hooked an unknown fish and it was released. Someone hooked an AJ and brought it in while I was getting beat down by the gag grouper. Two boats of divers pulled up and hooked to the rig and when they went over our bite was off.

Hit a few more rigs with only red snapper for luck. Headed back in a bit early and I took me a nice siesta in the bean bag until I felt the boat come off plane and looked up and saw tree tops. Forty-five minutes later we were on our way back to the cabins with ice chests full of fillets.

Well that was it and I am ready to go again! Great time out on the water and it was the most beautiful water I've ever seen."

We are glad you finally got to see some blue water, Staci, and look forward to getting you hooked up to a yellowfin on your next trip."

There are some grat July, August and September dates still available, along with a few weekdays in June. Give me a call and we'll set you up on the 32-Twin Vee, 36-Yellowfin, 34-Contender or 31-Gravois cat.

Venice Offshore Fishing ~ Dr. Shafor's Trip ~ www.reellouisianaadventures.com
Tue Feb 24, 2009 1:07:14 pm CST

After a few blustery fronts threatened to cancel their trip, Dr. Robert Shafor and friends headed to Venice for their long awaited trip. The group of five were among the first guests to stay at the brand new Lighthouse Lodge Friday evening. Congratulations to Ms. Joan Strohmeyer and family for bringing the Lighthouse back to it's pre-Katrina glory.

At five a.m. Saturday morning, the crew headed out so as to try and beat the weather forcasted to come in later. They settled in aboard Capt. Hunter Caballero's new 32-Twin Vee "Tail Whipped" powered by twin Yamaha 350's for the quick trip down river.

Hunter passed up the Lump and decided to run long and it paid off in a hot wahoo bite. The crew also landed four tough-fighting amberjack and a few blackfin tuna to top off the cooler.

The yellowfin tuna bite finally turned on late with several fish in the 200-pound class being reported that evening.

I am waiting on photos from Dr. Shafor and will add those later as I am sure they are still busy packing fish for his dad to take back to California.

If you are flexible and can pick your days around the weather, there are some good fish to be had in March. Those wanting to schedule summer trips should do so now, especially if you need a weekend.

DU Pennsylvania Tests the Waters in Port Sulphur ~ www.ReelLouisianaAdventures.com
Mon Feb 23, 2009 6:45:34 pm CST

DU Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Director Jeremy Mercer and his buddy, Paul Bramble from Maryland, made the trek south to test our waters for reds on fly recently. After discussing their timeframe, we decided on Jan 30th and 31st as their target dates.

I scheduled their trip with Capt. Bryan Carter aboard his Hells Bay flats skiff after determining the sytle of fishing they wished to do. With the blustery cold fronts rolling through, I told them it would be touch-and-go. Finally I gave them the all clear and they boarded flights from the frigid northeast.

The weather was a bit windy for their first day, but the still managed to catch/release some trophy fish. Saturday was a really nice day and the duo caught/released numerous trophy sized redfish along with some bruiser black drum -- all on fly and all sight casted in skinny water.

Paul emailed me and said they had a blast -- so much so that they are now looking into property in Plaquemines Parish! Now they know why we call it "SPORTSMAN'S PARADISE."

Thanks guys, and we hope to see you again soon.

If you want to schedule a fly fishing trip with one of the top guides in South Louisiana, give me a call and I will handle eveything to make your day one to remember. We have some world-class sight casting to reds yearround, so give me a call to schedule your date.

Bright sunny skies and not too much wind allowed Clay and his friend Jim to sight cast to many redfish and a monster black drum in skinny water. All fish were caught using Capt. Rich's "Terminator Crab" fly.

Below is Dr. Williams take on the day:

Hey Susan:

"Great day out of Port Sulphur with Capt. Rich.
Very low wind, pleasant temperature, and several BIG Bull REDS were sited.

Capt. Rich did everything right and Jim and I had a great time and as you can see, caught some world class fish.
Can't wait to go again!! Fun, relaxing, exciting day in the beautiful Louisiana marsh flyfishing-It doesn't get any better than the day we had!"

Redfish and Specks in Venice - Out With The Old, In With The NEW YEAR!!
Fri Jan 2, 2009 10:11:22 am CST

Great Way to Ring in the New Year...

Bob Hernandez and his dad John wanted to end 2008 on a good note and called me to arrange a trip to target redfish and speckled trout. Bob told me he had only two requests -- for John to get a hand getting in and out of the boat and to "catch alot of fish". After hearing their wishes, I decided Capt. Larry Stinson would be a perfect match, and set up their date.

The guys drove in the morning of the trip from Baton Rouge but somehow took a wrong turn (or two) and got lost near Belle Chasse for an hour or so. It didn't matter as the fog was pretty thick. Capt. Larry assisted John into the boat and they were off after the fog lifted. The first couple of stops yeilded nothing, but the third one was a charm.

First it was redfish and big ones to boot. The guys tussled with bull reds, including a a couple of 40-pound brusiers which they released. Then it was on to the speckled trout area.

John called me today and said, "Susan, I just had to call and tell you that I caught so many fish and Capt. Larry was a real gentleman."

"He really knows how to have fun and I was treated like a king," Hernandez added.

The Hernandez' are still eating specks and enjoying the bounty of their day of inshore fishing in Venice and said they are saving up for another trip this summer.

Fishing is good in the winter although bookings are a bit sluggish this time of year. If you would like to catch some quality fish and make a few memories with friends, family or co-workers, just give me a call and I'll arrange a trip to remember.

Best Fishes for a Great New Year!

Marsh Madness Invades Venice
Sun Sep 28, 2008 8:45:47 pm CDT

More "Marsh Madness" moments took place on Capt. Hunter's boat on Monday when I headed out with a great group consisting of Bill Jarobe, a design engineer from PRADCO/Bomber, Colin Moore, a magazine editor from Birmingham and Ric Hawthorne of OKUMA who travled all the way from Ontario. The plan was to test some jigs that PRADO is about to market and bend some of the newest jigging tackle outfitted with fast retrieve reels supplied by Okuma.

We tried to go offshore for tuna. Amazingly, we found blue water 8 miles out but we quickly decided the seas were a bit much for some of the crew so we headed northeast to the close in rigs to test jigs on snapper and grouper. The jigs we used were 4 oz. darters and 7 oz. knife-type jigs. It didn't take long to entice the first snapper -- a nice 8 pounder which I got on one of the 4 oz jigs. Everyone else hooked up as well on the heavier PRADCO jigs. We released about 70 snapper and I managed one nice gag grouper on the soon to be named "Suzie-Q" darter. What a color for this area!! After our arms and backs were completely spent, and the rods and reels were sufficiently put through their paces, we headed in for a hot meal at "Crawgators" consisting of our fresh grouper preapred for us along with bowls of hot seafood gumbo.

This was a great group of guys and I always look forward to getting together with them each September.

Thanks to Capt. Hunter for a great day of fishing his new 32-Twin Vee "Tail Whipped"...she's a beauty Hunter!

Venice Offshore ~ Capt. Hunter's Maiden Voyage on the New Twin Vee
Sun Sep 28, 2008 8:25:04 pm CDT

During the annual "Marsh Madness" event held in Venice last week, I got the chance to take a trip on Capt. Hunter's new blazing fast 32-Twin Vee rigged out with two YAMAHA 350hp four stroke engines.

Hunter's maiden voyage took place on Sunday, September 21st. He had a great crew consisting of Koby Fulks from UnderArmor, David Sams award winning outdoor writer/photographer, Myles Freeman and PRADCO/Bomber's Mark Schindel.

Although the seas were pretty rough, this was their only chance and they voted to make a run for it. This new style hull outfitted with twin 350hp YAMAHA's is SUPER FAST and got them down the River to South Pass in 22 minutes!

After boatingf a few dolphin and a lone blackfin tuna, Koby got the big fish of the day and ended up winning the largest tuna prize at Marsh Madness for his 88-pound Yellowfin.

If you are ready to get out on the water and tangle with some yellowfin and blackfin tuna and speedy wahoo, just give me a call and I'll schedule you aboard one of the 32-foot Twin Vees or aboard a 34-Contender, all of which are operated by the TOP captains in Venice and are FAST, COMFORTABLE boats.

There are some GREAT DATES still available in October, which is a fantastic time to target these species.

Fishing Offshore ~ Venice, LA. www.reellouisianaadventures.com
Wed Jul 23, 2008 9:59:38 am CDT

Last week was a busy one for the offshore fleet. The yellowfin tuna fishing has been on fire with an average of six good yellowfin per trip.

Capt. Bill had a couple of fly-guys on board on the 15th and they worked the rips, weedlines and Lump for little tunny, dolphin, snapper and more. The guys were in search of a big bull dolphin on fly, but that didn't happen. They're already looking forward to a repeat assault.

On Friday, it was a full slate of boats out. Cory Summers and crew had four yellowfin tuna and limits of snapper with Capt. Hunter on the 32-Twin Vee.

Mike Sams had a two boat bachelor part with Capt. Troy and Capt. Josh doing the entertaining. The tuna eluded them, but they had nice catches of snapper, amberjack and Troy's boat landed a bunch of really nice scamp group - YUM!

Capt. Bill had the USM-Gulf Coast Research Lab crew for snother shark tagging excursion. They found the sharks they were looking for an deployed several satellite tags. This crew also went in seach of whale sharks with the help of a spotter plane, but found none on Friday. They also "accidentally" boated a 130-pound yellowfin, which they graciously shared with others at the dock....Thanks guys!

On Saturday, Capt. James had Travis Leiva and crew on his 32-Twin Vee. I didn't get a report from them, but they were in the right spot and hopefully did well.

Capt. Kevin on the 30-Gravois "Pale Horse" garnered outstanding catch of the day with 10 big yellowfin tuna for Chris Green and the Mississippi crew on Saturday, July 19th. They also picked up their limits of nice red snapper and crammed them in the already stuffed fish box before calling it a day. Chris was so excited when he spoke to me as he and his girlfriend were grilling tuna steaks the next day. He said he is ready to set up a permanent camp in Venice!

On Sunday, Capt, Hunter had Cliff Carr and family. Cliff said Hunter put them on so many big tuna, they cried "uncle" -- especially when they had to fight an release a big blue marlin. The marlin broke the rod about two feet above the reel, so they had to "handline" the monster in while another reeled like crazy to keep up with the beast. Cliff will be sending some photos soon, which I will post soon.

The Faux Pas Rodeo takes place this Thursday-Sunday at Venice Marina. This should be hopping with over 200 boats registered to participate.

After getting threadfin herring and small hardtails, they headed out to bluewater to tangle with the tuna. They boated a good tuna early, but couldn't get the bite going for long. That afternoon they headed for the snapper grounds, where they landed 12 nice red snapper to fill the box.

Rick Flores and Crew - June 2008
California Meets Venice - www.reellouisianaadventures.com
Mon Jul 14, 2008 10:29:48 am CDT

Rick Flores, his brother and two buddies wanted to sample all of what they had heard Venice, LA. had to offer. I set them up in a full size mobile home since they would be spending 6 nights here in the delta.

Their first day was spent offshore with Capt. Bill on the 32-Twin Vee "Anger Management" where they boated tuna, wahoo and more. Day two was inshore with Capt. Cade and Capt. Ron. The guys couldn't believe that ALL of our fishing is that good...but we sure made a believer out of them. Day three was more offshore action, starting out with a 170-pound Yellowfin that their guest, Tom, got to fight. When it seemed the fight would last forever, Capt. Bill broke out the satellite gaff and dove down to subdue the beast.

Day four was back with Capt. Ron and Cade for trout and redfish action. By this time, their ice chests were full so they released their fish. Day five was to have been another offshore day, but Capt. Bill had to entertain Yamaha, so the group headed out with Capts. Buddy and Larry to wind down their week again electing to release their fish.

Rick sent me a nice note to post about their trip:

"Hi Susan, I'd like to thank you for setting up an unforgettable fishing week. Everyone had a wonderful time and they have been calling me to thank me again for setting up the trip and I tell them it wasn't me.

"If it hadn't been for you, and the arrangements you made for us, who knows what the trip would have turned out like."

"You always checked in with us to see if everything was going well and how we did fishing and you responded any problem that arouse. You’re a class act and there aren't many of them out there in the real world -- You are THE ONE in Venice, La."

"You have great guides both offshore and inshore and the fishing was fantastic. On Tuesday offshore we landed a 110 lb. yellow fin, a 73-lb Wahoo, three 40-50 lb Wahoo's and limits of red snappers. We also lost 2 other big yellowfin tunas. On our second offshore trip we landed a 170-lb yellowfin after a 2 hrs. 45 min. battle to get it in, a 75- lb. yellow fin, a 70-lb Wahoo and three 35-45 lb Wahoo then lost 2 others with one breaking the hook on the plug."

We had 3 inshore shore trips and we limited out 2 days on speckled trout and reds with one day we missed our limits but came close.

"We had a great experience that we won't forget and I plan on returning with my wife and let her enjoy some the great fishing that Venice, Louisiana has to offer."

"All the guides that you scheduled us with were top notch and really know their fishing and were all a pleasure to fish. One thing I wanted to mention is that I noticed that other inshore guides had someone else clean their clients fish and then charged them for the service while they sat around drinking. The guides you provided each day cleaned our fish and we weren't charged a penny. Being a former guide I never would have done that to any of my clients."
I applaud your guides and your efforts to make everything run smoothly for your guests."

Stanley McKaskle and the Holloway crews headed out on July 3rd with Capt. Hunter on "Tail Whipped". After a quick start with a 100-pound tuna, which the ladies Missy, Katie and Cheryl, triple-teamed the tuna bite cooled off. The remainder of the morning was slow, but Brody got to land several rainbow runners which put up a great fight and were just the right size for the junior angler. After the yellowfin bite stopped, it was time for some action so we headed to the snapper rigs to fill their limits.

8-year old Brody was a trooper and was so excited to see all the sea life in blue water. We examined some sargassum and the family couldn't believe the amount of shrinp, small fish and crabs that cling to the "floating nursery."
A 10 foot dusky shark came up for a look and took off with a piece of chum, giving David a turn on the rod.

For your chance at the big ones, give me a call and I will schedule your day on the deep blue!

Karen and Jason Caldwell made their annual trek to Venice.

I scheduled their trip with Capt. Hunter and I went along to snap a few photos. The action was so quick that I didn't get time to get shots of the tuna as they hit the box one behind the other -- It took us until 10:00 a.m. to catch their limit of six yellowfin. Next on the agenda were red snapper, which took just a few minutes to land.

The bite has been incredible lately and blue water has been close, so grab a crew of up to six and head out for some world-class action.

Jason and Karen, it was a pleasure to spend the day with you on Sunday. See you next year!!

Venice Offshore Fishing - On Fire! ~ 504-329-7335 ~ Reel Louisiana Adventures

So many reports and photos to post...so little time!

To summarize -- Hot temps and Hot Fishing.

Their trip started with stuffed seafood baked potatoes at "Crawgators" then a good nights rest at the FishIntimidator log cabins just up the road which I arranged for them.

John Lamey and the Mississippi Gulf Coast crew consisting of Coach Jerry Alexander, Vann Bodden, Gentry Williams, Paul Hans and Mike Tomphins headed out with Capt. Hunter aboard the 32-Twin Vee "Tail Whipped".

They got an early start departing Venice Marina at 5:30 a.m. and headed South to catch live hardtails or “tuna cracks” as we like to call them. Vann was named "baitmaster" as he loaded the well with frisky hardtails.

They continued south to bluewater and deployed a couple of live hardtails. The reel screamed as the crew shouted - FISH ON!!!

Paul Hans was the first "tuna virgin" up and got to feel the power. Gentry got into his first slug fest with a yellowfin also as his freinds stood back and enjoyed the agony he was experiencing. Seems his "friends" neglected to give him a fighting harness -- only a small belt with which to do battle.

“Next time you’ll know what a harness is," Lamey grinned.

The weather was PERFECT and the tuna were HUNGRY. It was TUNA-TUNA-TUNA-TUNA-TUNA!!!! The group boated FIVE yellowfin by 9:30 a.m. until the customers called for a change of scenery and a chance to let the sore muscles relax. They headed North to the shallow rigs to target red snapper. Gentry added a nice cobia to the box and there were mangrove snapper and amberjack to be had as well. Coach Jerry Alexander (the winninget coach in the state of Mississippi)caught a tasty scamp to add to the cooler.

On to the amberjack rigs, where Gentry almost took a swim. Had it not been for his strapping ex Alabama football buddy, Vann, the big AJ might have taken Gentry for a dive beneath the rig!

Back at the dock, Capt. Hunter cleaned their fish as the crew jammed TWO 170-quart coolers to the max with filets.

To get in on the action, give me a call.... there are a few weekdays left in July, plenty in August and September.

And a Limit of Nice Snapper Too! Walker & Capt. Hunter With a Nice Mahi Jeff and Walker Coburn with AJ's
Venice Offshore Fishing - Coburn Group
Mon Jun 30, 2008 1:21:33 pm CDT

June 21st

Had the pleasure of going along with Walker Coburn and his dad, Jeff, as well as Amber Marquez on Saturday.

Neither Jeff nor Walker had ever experienced anything like what they got into with Capt. Hunter. We tried to prepare them, but experience is the best teacher. Here is Walker's take on the offshore adventure:

"After catching live bait, we pulled up to our first real fishing destination near one of the rigs. I barely had time to gather my bearings on our surroundings when the Captain was directing me to a straining fishing pole.

I frantically fumbled with the fighting harness, (I think I initally had it on backwards and upsides down), and was finally able to take over. That was the biggest fish I had caught, by about 35 pounds so the fight was a little more intense than what I was use to from onshore fishing. I had no idea what we had on and then this beautiful florescent greenish-blue dolphin broke water, twice. I imagine the look on my face was priceless!

It was a great way to start off the day.....Even though Captain Hunter worked tirelessly through the whole trip it was several more hours before we were able to land our next keeper. Dad pulled in a yellowfin that luckily didn't put up much of a fight. I think he would probably argue with you about that though. That was a beautiful fish and has been great to eat! It is amazing how many friends show up to the house after they hear my freezer is full of fish...Catching my first amberjack was another experience I wont ever forget. I expected the same fight as the Mahi-Mahi put up, strong and steady. But as soon as the bait hit the bottom, it felt like a train had taken off, full speed, and I was tied to it. If it wasn't for Susan's help physically holding me in the boat, I might have gotten a chance to see what the BOTTOM half of those rigs looked like!"

"I sweated and cursed for what seemed like eternity but was probably only 15 minutes. I was glad when I got to hand over that responsibility to my dad. I think there is a saftey reason for the one amberjack per fisherman rule....Overall it was a great day, good fishing, good company and great weather. My dad and I still havent been able to stop talking about it."

We're glad you had a great time, Walker, and hope you'll come back soon for a re-match with more amberjack and yellowfin tuna.

(L to R) "Team Shady" Paul Catalano, Brent Hutson & Warren Potter Paul wonders when the pain will end as Capt. Hunter looks on
Venice Offshore Report ~ Summer is Here!
Tue Jun 17, 2008 6:29:22 pm CDT

Warren Potter made it down to fish with Capt. Hunter on the 32-Twin Vee "Tail Whipped." They got an early start on Saturday and had great fishing conditions. This is Warren's take on his second trip to Venice to fish with us:

"Team "Shady" (after our favorite place to stay) consisting of Brent Hutson, Paul Catalano and myself, are just back from another successful trip with Captain Hunter. Heeding Hunter's advice we planned a very early start in order to get to the rigs at sun rise. This strategy worked very well as there were fish all over the rig when we arrived. Brent hooked and landed a nice fat Black fin on a Frenzy popper as we were getting the chunks in the water. Unfortunately we had a break off, a cutoff and I whiffed on a tuna before Paul hooked into the fish pictured. That fish managed to get to the rig and around a cable, but could not quite get away. We managed a couple of good Mahi before the bite shut down. We saw some truly enormous fish slow rolling but, were unable to get them to eat anything including two palm sized runners.

We then went to a great weed line on the blue/green color change and picked through some more Mahi. I again lost a good fish on a Frenzy popper, would have been the best Mahi of the day, but he literally stood on his head to get loose. Fish 2, Warren 0. We then decided to try the shallower rigs for snapper. The fish cooperated immediately and we are bringing good Red Snapper over the rail. We vented some of the smaller fish and sent them home waiting for the better fish. Of course that took no time and soon enough we had our limit including one big fish for me, finally.

Our next targets were Cobia and Hunter had a couple of spots. At the second rig I hooked up to a good fish on a yellow jig but as it draws near to the boat we see a decidedly pink tone and up pops another really good snapper. Already had our limit so back he went. Same rig a few minutes later and I am on another fish, this one is acting like a Cobia. My poor luck continued and that fish also came unbuttoned, but I hooked up again while reeling the jig back up. My losing trend was not quite finished and that fish came loose too!

By this time our day was nearing it's end and we had some weather between us and the marina, so it was time to leave. Hunter, as always, worked his tail off to put us quality fish. Every time we fish together with him we are more impressed by his abilities and his work ethic. He is always prepared, has a plan, executes efficiently and follows through better than anyone I have seen.

We had turned this weekends trip into a competition of sorts with some friends fishing on two other boats. Rules were the biggest Tuna per boat and the biggest other edible fish per boat. I am proud to say we beat the other two boats with our Tuna and Mahi. Only bummer of the trip was the shameful way these guys acted when faced with the loss. Carter you should be embarrassed by the actions you and your friends took, sneaking out with out even so much as a goodbye.

All in all though a wonderful trip. Team Shady will return soon!"

A Nice Bull for Darryl Sailfish Release on the Rip A Whole Lotta Bull...Dolphin That Is!
VENICE OFFSHORE FISHING - WHAT A WEEKEND!
Mon Jun 9, 2008 11:24:39 am CDT

After getting our trips blown out on Friday and Saturday due to strong East winds, Capt. Bill headed out with Darryl, Maggie, Thomas and their guests to target the big ones.

After a brief huddle and decision on which direction to head first, the crew made a bait stop and loaded up with hardtails. Trolling a rip, they picked up 20 dolphin, 10 of which were in the 20 to 25# class. They continued along the rip and to their surprise, hooked up a sailfish which was quickly photographed and released.

The crew changed locations and picked up several wahoo, the largest going 50-pounds. Darryl said they missed many more as the lit up striped fish swatted at the trolling lures.

Their last stop in the afternoon was to target yellowfin tuna, so out went the FRENZY fishing kite setup with a herring dangling just below the surface. It didn't take more than a few minutes before the first live bait was inhaled and the fight was on. Thomas got the big fish honors of the day with a 95# yellowfin. The crew boated two more yellowfin and with the fish box stuffed to the max, headed back to Venice Marina.

The crew watched as Capt. Bill and mate Bobby cleaned their fish and the crew soon stacked a wheelbarrow full of gallon size Ziploc bags of filets.

Total tally for the day: 3 Yellowfin Tuna to 95-pounds, 20 Dolphin(mahi-mahi) to 25-pounds, 1 Blackfin Tuna, 3 Wahoo to 50-pounds and a Sailfish release. I'll get with Capt. Bill later this week to download some of the awesome photos he took and post them.

Darryl King, who has fished all over the world or private and charter vessels, said it was without question the BEST single day of charter fishing he has ever experienced.

The action will only continue to heat up from here on out through the summer. If you haven't sceduled your date yet, you had better do so quickly. June is just about full, July has some weekdays open and August has a few weekends and a bunch of good weekdays at this time.

VENICE OFFSHORE REPORT ~ MAGNOLIA STEEL CREW

Chris Crowe and the crew from Meridian, MS. headed out with Capt. Hunter for a bachelor party/overnight trip Thursday afternoon. I got to spend some time with them as they loaded up the boat with plenty of food and adult beverages as I was waiting to photograph the boats as they departed during the Cajuns Canyons Billfish Classic at Venice Marina.

The seas Thursday evening were great for the ride out, and the fish were cooperative. Capt. Hunter called us on the radio Friday morning to report 11 yellowfin tuna up to 80-pounds and a lone amberjack....that's a nice change of pace when the tuna outnumber the amberjack. The AJ's have been downright pesky lately with many bruisers in the 50 to 60 pound class.

I headed out on Friday with Dr. Jim Franks and Dr. Eric Hoffmayer of the USM Gulf Coast Research Lab to tag sharks. The bonita were soon swarming as we set up a chum line and drew the sharks to the Twin Vee. Capt. Bill Delabar put us on some big sandbar sharks and silky sharks which were measured, photographed and released unharmed.

Although our target species were dusky sharks, none were caught on Friday. The scientists are also on the lookout for whale sharks, so if you spot one, please note the date/time/location/number of sharks and shoot me and email so I can pass on the sighting. More trips are scheduled later this summer to try and put some satellite tags in whale sharks and all information is helpful.

Snapper season opened on Sunday, June 1st and the red snapper are swarming at the nearshore rigs. Remember when targeting red snapper, new requlations require you must have an approved venting tool, a dehooker and use non-stailess steel circle hooks.

If you want to get out on the water for some yellowfin tuna action, dolphin, wahoo, amberjack and red snapper too, give me a call and I'll schedule your date on a FAST BOAT with a TOP CAPTAIN.

Andy Nevers and the crew form Nevers Electrical Contractors had a great day with Capt. Hunter on the 32-Twin Vee "Tail Whipped."

The guys said that Capt. Hunter was the hardest working captain that thye had ever been with, and that all the arrangements for the trip were"perfect!"

The boated three nice yellowfin in the 100-pound class and topped that off with a 55# wahoo.

Andy says they'll be scheduling a repeat assault on the tuna soon -- and Capt. Hunter will be at the helm for sure.

The weekend is looking good. As a matter of fact, I'll be on the water this Saturday with a crew from NAS Belle Chasse to capture a few photos for an upcoming feature as well as handle the "celebrity deckhand" duties. It sure will be nice to get offshore.

Thirty two ladies made the trek to Venice last Sunday to participate in the 5th annual International Womens Fishing Association Redfish & Speckled Trout Tournament.

Tackle is limited to spinning or baitcasting and use of 8# or 12# Ande monofilament exclusively. The ladies target numbers -- not size of fish -- as all IWFA events are 100% release.

During the gala "Taste of Louisiana" kick off event Sunday at Venice Marina, the ladies found out what three guides they would fish with during the tounament via a blind draw.

Monday 32 anglers headed out with 16 of the top inshore guides in Venice to target reds and specks. At the end of Day One, Kathy Delahoussaye of Islamorada, FL. garnered high point angler racking up 1420 points with Capt. Ross Barkhurst.

On Tuesday, the armada headed back to the West side of the river where Susan Gros, fishing with Capt. Boola Mills, took advantage of a hot redfish bite amassing 2085 points for high point angler, Day 2. It was not enough to pull ahead of Connie O'Day from Texas who held the first place spot going into Day 3.

On Wednesday, the third and final day of the tournament, it was anybodys game. Some headed back to the "honey holes" on the West side, while others ventured south or East in search of spot tails. Kathy Holeman pulled ahead by scoring
1890 points on the final day with Capt. Boola after two consistent, good days of fishing earlier in the week.

3190 REDFISH AND 54 SPECKLED TROUT WERE CAUGHT & RELEASED BY THE 32 IWFA ANGLERS.

Venice Offshore - Yellowfin Are Back ~ www.reellouisianaadventures.com

Nat Parks was a little worried about his scheduled trip this past Saturday, since his crew had their sights set on yellowfin tuna. It's no secret the Lump has been less than spectacular the past month or so, I told them we would have a change in plans if they were up for the challenge.

After bundling up for the ride down the river they were ready for some action to warm them up. Below is Nat's take on his day with Capt. Bill Delabar on the 32-Twin Vee "Anger Management" - they ended their day with 6 YELLOWFIN TUNA and 3 DOLPHIN:

"With the end of a crummy Lump season looming over our heads we knew we would have to be committed to have a chance at some Yellowfin. As we headed out of South Pass, we soon discovered that the sea state was too rough to make the long run to the rigs. We headed off to try another spot and on the way ran across some Black Fin chasing Pogies out of the water. After netting some Pogies we tried to catch the Black Fin but they weren’t cooperating. Eventually we gave up and settled in for the long ride out to the oil platforms. Immediately upon our arrival we spotted a pair of Dolphin Fish, dropped the bait in the water and it was fish-on. Not to be outdone the other Dolphin Fish promptly committed suicide on a second line. After that quick action we started working the Tuna and pulled in a 100# Yellow Fin within the first half-hour. We spent the rest of the day trolling, chumming and hand feeding line, kite fishing, and trying every trick Capt. Bill had to catch what wound up being the nicest group of fish for the day when we arrived back at Venice Marina."

"We had a really great time and already have a spot reserved in May to take advantage of some early summer action. Thanks again to Susan for setting us up with ANOTHER top-notch Captain and a big thanks to Capt. Bill and Cameron for their hard work and for showing us a great time!"

After a couple of weather days the first part of the week, the captains will be back at it on Wednesday.

Plenty of dates open in March if you want to get in on the action now. Summer dates in May, June and July are quickly filling up, so call now to reserve your date on a FAST BOAT with a TOP CAPTAIN.

Saturday 2/23...Everett Revercomb and his friends had a good day with Capt. Bill Delabar on the 32-foot Twin Vee. They kept busy with wahoo catching 4 and missing quite a few others, along with getting their limits of hefty amberjack in a mere 20-minute time span -- which resulted in some sore arms. They also picked up a stray blackfin that hit a trolled lure.

Sunday...2/24 Steven Plauche and the crew from Valero Refinery jumped on board Capt. Bill's boat after Hunter suffered a blown engine the day prior to their scheduled trip. Bill scored a repeat of the prior days trip boating 5 amberjack, 4 wahoo and a lone blackfin tuna.

The good news is although there have been no yellowfin to speak of on the Lump recently, they can be found. Hopefuly March weather will be more consistent, and give the captains a chance to get at them.

Congrats also go out to Capt. Kevin Beach on the "Pale Horse" for tagging the first blue marlin of the year for the 3rd year in a row. Way to go, Kevin!

They had a great day Monday with Capt. Chas Marsh on his Hell's Bay, then headed out Tuesday with Capt. Bryan Carter. These are just a couple of the photos from their day with Bryan.

The guys hit the weather just right between fronts and had a spectacular day of chasing Cajun Bonefish boating and releasing a ton of trophy reds. They even had a 22-pound double header on one of Bryans' VooDoo crab flies. They didn't catch a redfish UNDER 16 pounds that day...now that's World-class fly fishing!

Fri Feb 22, 2008 4:30:58 pm CST

We covered all the bases this week while entertaining a large corporate group from New York and points as far away as London. This was their second consecutive February trip to Venice, and the weather cooperated nicely for us this time. Sunday evening, I got them all settled in the plush Venice Sportsman’s Lodge where Ms. Gloria put out a wonderful spread of food including stuffed chicken with seafood sauce, an assortment of desserts and such. Excitement was high as each of the anglers found out their assigned boats for the following day.

On Monday, Capt. Hunter Caballero and Capt. Bill Delabar picked up the guests at the lodge and headed out on the 32-Twin Vee’s to show them some of the spectacular rig fishing we have here. Since these guys only wanted to keep a few fish for dinner, we elected to head for the nearshore rigs to catch and release red snapper, grouper, bull redfish and croaker. The action was non-stop for hours until the customers said “take us to the dock…our arms are like spaghetti!” We did keep 14 nice lane snapper for dinner.

On the inshore scene, Capt. Jeff Fuscia and Capt. Ron Price put the customers on hundreds of redfish, playing catch-and-release for the most part and keeping only a few to add for dinner.

Capt. Chas had the fly guys who traveled all the way from London, England just to sample our skinny water redfishing. They were not disappointed, with each of them landing double-digit redfish on 8-weight fly gear along with 25-pound black drum. On their second day, Tuesday, the conditions were near perfect and Capt. Bryan Carter took advantage of them heading for the “donkeys” that prowl the edge of the Gulf. Chris and Matt doubled up on two, 22-pound reds on fly. Bryan said the guys didn’t boat a fish UNDER 16-pounds that day. Now THAT’S world class fly fishing!!

Day two of the offshore found better conditions, so we headed out to try for wahoo, amberjack and scamp. First pass on one of the rigs resulted in a screaming hookup, but unfortunately, the wahoo won that battle ending up in the rig and taking Capt. Bill’s favorite red and white lure. Next stop was the Amberjack hole, where we deployed magnum mullet and each of the guys (and gals) got to test their biceps. The largest AJ was about 60-pounds and was landed my Mike from New York although Tanya came in a close second with her 50-pounder. All the AJ’s were released in great shape after a quick photo. We made a move to look for scamp and kept coming up with big gag grouper, which unfortunately, are under closure from February 15th through March 15th so back they went. We did boat a tasty 20-pound scamp which I convinced Mike to take back to New York.

Capt.Hunter went in seach of monster Warsaw that day and the customers got to feel the brute force these giants can dish out. Later they met up with us at the nearshore rigs to play catch and release with more snapper.

Day three found most of the guests headed home, but some of them made it out for a few hours to cram in their last fix of inshore and fly fishing. Capt Ron had Dave and Sage for redfish and speckled trout action and Capt. Jeff entertained Mike and Malone with reds and flounder. Capt. Chas had Mike for a quick morning of chasing redfish in the marsh. Cloud cover and increasing winds made it a tougher day, but MIke still got a few "Cajun Bonefish" on fly before catching and afternoon flight home.

If you have a group you would like to entertain, give me a call and I will handle all the details.

Fished Tuesday and Wednesday with a big New York group booked through Ms. Susan-Reel Louisiana Adventures. With me Tuesday was Kenneth, Benji and Dave and on Thursday Mike and Malone. Tuesday started off just like Monday with lots of action from the start. We caught close to 40 reds and then the tide quit along with our bite. We bounced around to a few more spots and caught a couple of trout along with a few big reds but never found a good bite again. Wednesday was a little slower but we were pushed for time as the guys had to be back in early but we did manage to catch 15 reds and 6 decent flounder. Capt. I fished on Monday with Dave and Tonya from New York and Mike from Missouri who were part of a big group from Ms. Susan-Reel Louisiana Adventures. We headed downriver in the cool windy conditions all bundled up to see if we could find some reds. We found them and plenty to go around. Dave struck first catching a couple before Mike joined in and later Tonya got into the act catching her share. When the dust had cleared we estimate that we caught close to 100 reds. They kept five and released the rest to be caught another day. Most of the fish were between 16-22 inches. Not bruisers but definitely fun to catch. Capt. Venice Weekend Report
Tue Feb 12, 2008 8:31:48 am CST

What a welcomed change! The weekend kicked off with CALM seas last Friday.

Louis Todd and crew headed out with Capt. Brett on the 32-Twin Vee “KRAKEN” to sample some Midnight Lump action. In addition to a 55-pound wahoo, the four anglers kept busy boating blackfin tuna and 30 beeliner snapper, which also happen to be some of the tastiest fish in the Gulf.

Saturday Capt. Chris Wilson had Dean Chiapetta and crew on the 34-Contender. Chris put the hurt on some BIG wahoo, boating two 84-pounders and several more nice fish. The guys shared with me that the real thrill was watching as the big wahoo skyrocketed on the baits. Dean added that he really enjoys fishing with Chris as he operates an inshore as well as an offshore boat giving clients the option of changing plans quickly according to weather – a big plus this time of year. It was good to see you again, Dean and CONGRATS on the nice “hoo”!

Also heard the free diving was fantastic with a new 118-pound state record wahoo hitting the dock, which bumped the record that has been held by my friend Capt. Bill Delabar. Time to jump in and go get another one, Bill!

INSHORE ACTION

Toby Walcott and friends flew in Saturday from Ohio to sample some of our Louisiana fishing. On Sunday, I had them scheduled with Capt. Brandon Carter and Capt. Jeff Fuscia to try their hands at light tackle redfish action. The guys were elated to catch their limits of redfish early, then play catch and release till their arms wore out later in the day.

On Monday they were scheduled to fish offshore with Capt. Bill Delabar to target tuna and wahoo. The forecast wasn’t good – with 7-9 foot seas predicted, so I rescheduled them with Capt. Jeff for another day of inland fishing chasing redfish. Of course, the weather man blew the forecast, and it was no worse than 3 foot all day…oh well, better to err on the safe side then send folks out on a miserable, wet trip. Needless to say they had another spectacular day with Capt. Jeff, catching and releasing plenty of redfish up to 18-pounds on light tackle. The crew is headed out for their last day today to sneak in one more trip before the cold front comes screaming through on Wednesday. Hopefully the bite will be good and they will get into some of the speckled trout action that has been heating up since the recent warm temps rolled through.

To get in on the action, give me a call and I’ll customize your fishing adventure with one of the most professional & productive guides in Venice!

LOUISIANA FLY FISHING ~ www.reellouisianaadventures.com

Ken Harper always wanted to catch a redfish on fly. I told him that his dream was possible and set him up with Capt. Bryan Carter on a 16-foot Hells Bay. Ken's fishing buddy couldn't make it that day, so I went along to take photos and back him up.

The morning started out amazingly nice with light winds and sunshine -- something we have not seen a lot of lately. Capt. Bryan launched his flats skiff in Port Sulphur and we headed south where the big reds live to take advantage of the sunlight while it lasted.

At first, the fish were a bit skittish as the water was still cold from the recent freeze, but Ken spotted a huge dark spot in the water just ahead of the baot and cast to it. The water exploded as a big balck drum inhaled his fly and streaked off giving Ken quite a fight on his 9-weigh fly rod. The big drum weighed 25-pounds and was released. We got bak to business with me taking a turn to give Ken's arms time to rebound. I got a nice red on a VooDoo crab and then it was Ken's turn to find that redfish he had always dreamed of landing.

Bryan picked out a shadow slowly moving about 40 feet ahead of the boat and expertly instructed Ken to cast to it. After several attempts, the big red engulfed the fly and the fight was on. Not many anglers can say their first two saltwater fish on fly were a 20# red and a 25# black drum!! Congratulatoins Ken on your fantastic catch. We'll see you in April for more action.

Venice Offshore Report

Sorry I've been a bit slow in posting some of the offshore action from the Lump lately. I have been moving plus it seems as soon as we get one trip out, the "big blow" comes back and drives the captains back to shore again. As is usual for the Lump, action has been up and down.

On Sunday, Mike Crawford and friends hit the Gulf with Capt. Brett on the 32-Twin Vee "KRAKEN". Instead of fighting the crowds and lack of action the day before on the Lump, they opted for open water which resulted in the 50# wahoo and blackfin pictured.

Last Monday, Buddy and Mike Hall finally made it out. They have the dubious honor of being my "most cancelled crew" with SEVEN attempts over a two year period before they made it to the famed Midnight Lump. Capt. Brett and the crew were minding their own business catching bonita for bait when a huge mako decided to bite the boat then proceeded to tear into some of the motor rigging. Brett quickly deployed a bonita chunk and tossed it to the lit up blue shark and the battle was on. Both Buddy and Mike got to experience the fight a mako can dish out on stand up tackle. Mike and Capt. Brett are pictured with the 201# Mako, which everyone agrees is "the prize of the Lump," especially when the action was slow that day. Buddy said they had some of the Mako steaks back in Orlando and they were delicious!

Capt. Bill had the Mike Rasmussen crew earlier in January who came all the way to Venice from New York to sample our tuna fishing. Pictured is the group with their day's catch including yellowfin tuna, an 85-pound wahoo and blackfin tuna. These New Yorkers headed north with coolers loaded down with steaks.

If you haven't gotten your annual "Midnight Lump Fix" there are still a few dates open in February and plenty in March if Lump is your game.

Summer dates in the PRIME MONTHS of May-June-July are quickly booking, so if you need a weekend better grab it now or you'll be watching the action instead of landing the big one! These are the prime months for tuna, marlin, mahi-mahi and more.

Everyone has been "paitently" waiting for the annual appearance of yellowfin tuna on the Midnight Lump. This past weekend, the tuna FINALLY made a showing and Mike "RAZ" Rasmussen and his buddies from New York were there to witness it.

Capt. Bill Delabar put them on so many yellowfin tuna that they had to barter for extra ice chests to ship their tuna steaks home in. Add to that, a 75-pound wahoo and their trip was complete.

If you have been waiting for the fish to show up, better get on the phone TODAY to book your trip. A few dates left in January, February is almost full, and March has availability. FAST, COMFORTABLE 32-foot Twin Vee catamarans, or sleek 34 or 36-foot Contenders to get you to the Lump first!!!

The guys will send photos which I will post as soon as they get their tuna haul back to New York!

I fished this past Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with Hugh and Grace Weatherly and Margaret Brown. The trip was booked through Susan Gros of Reel Louisiana Adventures. The weather was incredible all three days proceeding this cold front and the fish responded giving us 3 days of constant action. Days one and two were the best with over 60 reds caught and released each day. This group only kept a few to eat the first couple of days and released the others to be caught another day. On Day 3 we kept a limit of eating sized reds along with 10 trout but caught somewhere between 50-60 fish. Venice you gotta love it!!! Capt. Jeff Fuscia/Delta Dawn Guide Service 504-382-5488.

Sharon and Michael Pusin were making arrangements a few months ago to attend a large Opthamologist convention in New Orleans when they happened upon an article in the Baltimore Sun newspaper that I did with LA Times travel writer Hugo Martin.

Michael showed the article to Sharon and said, "I was thinking they might have some good fishing south of New Orleans, and this proves it." They picked up the phone and we discussed what species were available in November. I arranged an adventure that included an inshore trip for reds, specks and flounder as well as an offshore trip to target larger species. Their plush accommodations, including gormet meals, were booked at the historic Woodland Plantation.

On Friday, I met Sharon and Michael at the dock and got them loaded up on Capt. Bill Delabar's 32-foot Twin Vee where I would serve as their deckhand and photographer during the trip. We got them bundled up for the ride south as the river and passes are always cooler than anyone expects this time of year.

Bill and I had already loaded the livewell with magnum mullet, and easily added 3 dozen lively hardtails using FRENZY sabikis on the run out.

The plan was to troll for wahoo first since the flotilla was already headed for the rig and the tuna bite had been late the day before. It proved to be the right decision as a 50-pound wahoo smoked the left long pink Stretch on our second pass.

Sharon was so excited and could not believe that they had landed such a big fish just minutes after deploying the lures. She shared with me that she and Michael have fished all over the world but that the wahoo was their biggest fish ever!

Next stop was to try and tempt some AJ's and other bottom fish, but instead the sharks wanted to get in on the action -- and these were big ones too! After releasing two in the 200-250# class, and boating a few beeliners and grouper, we decided to move on before losing anymore lead to the toothy critters.

The AJ's were a no show at the next rig so it was time to head south to Medusa. As we were arriving several of the boats were starting to head in. We set up a drift with chum and it wasn't long until a yellowfin stripped the line from my hand and streaked into the depths. Michael got to fight the first one and can now appreciate the power of these magnificient fish.

Capt. Bill had the right combination and within a matter of an hour and a half, the customers had boated 5 yellowfin tuna and said "We're done -- take us in."

The seas were slick and the ride in was beautiful with the sun setting across the Gulf. Back at the dock, Capt. Bill and I cleaned and packed their tuna and wahoo for shipment back to Baltimore.

There are some quality fish around right now, so get a group of up to six together and give me a call. If you can pick your days between fronts, you are almost guaranteed a spectacular day of fishing. In addition to tuna and wahoo, their have been an unusual amount of blue marlin hanging around.

Also, don't forget the Midnight Lump season(where giant yellowfin up to and over 200-pounds are taken annually), is just around the corner. If you haven't scheduled your date, better get on the books soon or you'll be left at the dock.

Venice Tuna Fishing - Boats Available This Weekend!!

NOW this is a rare post--two of the BEST offshore captains in Venice are available this weekend -- either Saturday or Sunday.

Picture yourself and your friends aboard a FAST 32-foot Twin Vee catamaran slicing across the calm, cobalt blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, then pulling up to one of many oil platforms to catch yellowfin tuna, wahoo and the like. Heck, the conditions will be so nice, you might even get a shot at a blue marlin! Seas less than 2 feet all weekend are predicted...

We had such a windy October that the fish haven't gotten much pressure. From the looks of things, November is shaping up to be a fabulous month if you can catch it right between fronts. This weekend will be one of those golden opportunities, so get a group (up to six) together, give me a call and TREAT YOURSELF TO A GREAT WEEKEND OF PUMPING BIG YELLOWFIN TUNA AND SKIP THE GYM !!

Dave and Pauletta McKenzie traveled from California to experience their first saltwater fly fishing trip to our area and from the looks of their success, it won't be their last trip to Louisiana!

I scheduled Dave with Capt. Bryan Carter aboard his 16 foot Hells Bay flats skiff on Oct 24, 25 and 26th and the rest is history.

Although it was cold and blustery, the fish didn't seem to mind. He caught and released bull redfish, sheephead and black drum on fly. Some of his comments from the day are attached below:

"Thanks so much for everything Susan. We both had a wonderful time despite the chilly weather. The fishing was great and the hospitality was too...

I'm not a world traveler by any means but I have been with lots of guides around the country. Bryan was the BEST I've been with. He worked hard and really went out of his way to put me on quality fish." Your Redfish population is unlike anything I have ever seen. I caught more sight fish on this trip than all the Fla trips combined. Yep, I was pleased with that Sheepshead..I've been trying for some time to get one a fly..suprised my how well these cooperated. I got 4 or 5 before it was over but that one was right 6lbs. I definitly want to plan some offshore fishing my next time out."

"I will be putting some dates together in the next month for a return trip. The WWII Museum was amazing! My only regret was that we didn't stay at the Plantation..I think my wife would have really enjoyed that. Next time..."

Thanks again!

Friday, October 26th

Kenny Howe and friends from Texas managed to book the one calm day during this horrendous stretch of WINDY weather and hit pay dirt with Capt. Bill Delabar.

They made the long run on the 32-foot Twin Vee and it paid off. The crew caught five nice yellowfin on live baits rigged on FRENZY ultimate circle hooks, then decided to relocate and pull baits for wahoo. Instead of wahoo, they boated two kings which the guys kept for the smoker.

On their way back, they made quick limits of red snapper before calling it a day. Coolers were overflowing as the guys loaded up for the drive back to Texas.

Hopefully we have gotten all of the wind and rain out of the way in October so that November will have off the charts tuna fishing.

As a reminder, Midnight Lump season is just around the corner, so if you have not made your reservation to fish this area which is famous for 200-pound plus yellowfin tuna, giant mako shark and triple digit wahoo, better make the call soon.

There are still a few weekend dates left, but those will book up quickly. The prime time is usually mid-January through February, although March can sometimes be outstanding as well.

Johnny Lamey - Catch of the Day Quick Limit of Nice Red Snapper Delabar-Nice Cobia
Offshore Venice - Snapper, Scamp & Cobia
Mon Oct 15, 2007 3:45:09 pm CDT

I put together a last minute fun trip with Capt. Bill Delabar and our good customer, John Lamey of Moss Point, MS. last Wednesday.

Transported some special Myrtle Grove live baits consisting of pinfish, finger mullet, croakers and pogies in a big ice chest in the back of my Suburban. Surprisingly, I didn't lose one of them on the trip down even without a pump.

The original plan was to target tuna, but the relentless East winds dictated otherwise when we made the run downriver that morning. The three of us agreed since this was supposed to be "fun" that we would stay close and target bottom species rather than take a beating in the rough seas. From the reports that came in over the radio, we made the right call.

There were plenty of quality red snapper in East Bay as well as West Delta, and I actually got my limit on the first drop. Bill and Johnny had a few chuckles watching me tussle with two really nice snapper on a double rig. Since we were fishing shallow water rigs in 40-80 feet of water, it was easy to release the ones we didn't want. Johnny Lamey got the snapper of the day -- a nice 17 pounder while fishing right up against one of the rig legs. As always, you have to "go where they live" to catch the big sows!

After boxing our limits of red snapper, some lane snapper, a scamp plus some other assorted fish, we let Bill jump in to have some fun with the speargun.

He free dived several of the shallow platforms and shot a nice 40-lb cobia in spite of less than ideal visibility. Bill said he had a 60-pounder swim right up to him, along with several others but the low vis made it a difficult shot.

Johnny and I released a number of big bull readfish, some monster white trout and of all things, a ribbon fish that ate a pogie...WEIRD!

Wonderful day with some great guys. I can't wait to try out the "Stacy's Spicy Scamp Taco" recipie from this month's Louisiana Sportsman "BurstFactor" article. Everything I learned from those guys certainly paid off when targeting the scamp.

Well the winds are finally starting to die down a bit to let us get back at the yellowfin tuna. I have a big group coming down to fish inshore and offshore Wednesday and Thursday this week, so hopefully we will get some revenge on those elusive tuna.

Still some great dates open in October, plenty in November and December.

If you are planning on fishing the Midnight Lump in the 2008 season (Jan-March) it is not too early to schedule your date, especially if you need a Saturday.

Give me a call and I will take care of everything.

Six Nice Yellowfin for the Potter Crew Late September Yellowfin Tuna Hooked Up!
Venice Offshore Tuna - Warren Potter Group

Saturday, September 29th Report

It seems the wind has blown steadily for weeks now bringing the offshore tuna fishing to a screeching halt. It is not that the tuna are not there (they are) but that sea conditions are too rough for all but the heartiest of anglers.

Warren Potter made it out on the Tail Whipped with Capt. Hunter on Saturday, September 29th in spite of less than ideal conditions. Warren and his two friends were rewarded with a fine catch of tuna and snapper. I'll let Warren pick up the story from there...

Susan:

"What a day we had. I have to tell you, we were quite worried that you were going to tell us it's going to be too rough to fish, on what turned out to be a great trip.

The winds picked up throughout the day but were never a problem.

Okay enough of that garbage let's get to the fish! We were able to make bait easily at our first stop but had nothing but a small Blackfin there. On to rig #2 and what turned out to be our final Tuna destination. We caught a single, about 60# first, then a double header of 60# and 70# fish, then three singles up to about 90#. If there is any fish that fights harder than a Yellowfin Tuna all the way to the boat you are going to have to show it me to make me believe it. After the bite slowed Hunter took us to get some Red Snapper, of which we caught six. We also had a brief Cobia sighting but no luck there. After that it was a run back to the dock for a lot of backslapping and smack talking! The amount of meat we took from those fish was almost embarrassing!

Susan, I fish a lot and have been lucky enough to spend some time with some of the best Captains in the world and I have never seen one work any harder to put people on fish than Hunter. I will highly recommend him to anyone fishing in Venice. His focus, determination and obvious love for what he is doing is going to help him be one of the greats. I am still sore as I write this but I am already planning our return!

Thanks again for all your help, Susan. Oh yeah, the Zydeco Grill was a great place for lunch, good call.

Regards,

Warren Potter

What a nice weekend! The first blast of cool, dry air always gets us excited about the great fall fishing that is just around the corner.

On Saturday, Deb and Keith Bowman joined me for a day of inshore fishing with Capt. Jeff Fuscia, who had a last minute cancellation. Conditions weren't the best, but we headed out armed with live shrimp as insurance. Our first stop near Pass-a-Loutre yeilded one keeper red and a couple of throwbacks. With the wind steadily increasing from the NE, we headed south to the spillways off of Southwest Pass for a little protection. Working along the canes as well as anchoring out in the deeper water, we picked up several more redfish and a handful of fat speckled trout.

Keith finally added one nice flounder to the ice chest, after hooking way too many faux flounders (a.k.a. stingrays!)

Capt. Jeff was his usual cordial self taking care of everything so his guests could enjoy their day. It was great to spend the day with Debbie & Keith and the weather couldn't have been nicer temperature wise.

We made a couple of more stops on our way in, but by 2 p.m. the wind was screaming 20+ knots, so we called it a day.

The fish seem to be on the move which made for a challenging day, but with good friends, fun was had by all. Soon we'll be catching fat speckled trout on the inside and we can't wait!
